I had to read this book for a course in grad school, or rather I chose it to read for the course Trade Book review, and I have to admit, I really enjoyed it. More description of the surroundings and people would have been nice, but the story really propels things forward. Poor Gilly, immoral as they get, but for the "right" reasons, gets caught stealing and is sent to Fairy Tale Reform School which is run by the wicked step-mother of Cinderella. In the Kingdom of Enchantasia, this school is for young criminals who have been caught three times and Gilly gets caught three times. She just wanted to give her sister a nice birthday present, but she pays for it. The writing is decent. Nit-picky things like "she nodded her head" sometimes threw me off, but otherwise, I have to say I was pleased with the outcome of the book. I look forward to reading the next in the series when it comes out and follow Gilly and Jax through more of their adventures.Tags : Flunked (Fairy Tale Reform School) [Jen Calonita] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Would you send a villain to do a hero's job? Flunked is an exciting new twisted fairy tale from the award-winning author of the Secrets of My Hollywood Life series. I really enjoyed Flunked. I thought the premise was really exciting and different I just feel it fell a little short. It was really cute. There is an almost missed opportunity for a girls Harry Potter here (which is exciting since Gilly is a bit of a bad girl). I think the author could have done a little more to get you to really care about the surppporting characters. On the other hand I dare you to not love Gilly. Her version on Cinderella's stepmother is really interesting and I feel if really flushed out you can be just as confused about her as you are about Severus Snape. In the end it was a fast paced and exciting book but with some down falls. Over the last 15 years kids have really proven that the length of the book doesn't matter as lo g as you have a relatable lead and strong story to tell you they will read. I hope the sequel, which I will be reading, keeps the values of loyalty and love but digs a bit deeper on plot.
Flunked (Fairy Tale Reform School)
I like Gilly's quick nimble mind, with her sardonic thoughts of authorities and Royals. After just a few days there, I'm sure that her roommate Kayla is up to something. Perhaps she secretly writes for the magic Happily Ever After Scroll news service. And every adult they've introduced so far seems to not be as reformed as they claim.
It was a fun, quick read, both light-hearted and serious with some surprises and twists.
I just finished reading this today, and am waiting impatiently for my next paycheck so I can buy the next one.
The main character, Gillian Cobbler, is well-written and believable, with sufficient motivation for her actions. Her friends and enemies are either interesting, intriguing, or both. Some of the lesser characters don't come across as fully believable yet, though I expect that will change as the series progresses.
The plot is reasonable, with a couple of twists and turns. I didn't find them surprising, though that's not a fault of the book; I'm older than the average child (by at least 40 years). In my opinion, it's a good book, enjoyable, and well worth reading...and worth keeping, for enjoying again and again down the road.
This was a cute story, I am pre-reading stories to read to my children or allow my children to read when they are old enough. This story seemed to move quickly but it was fun and has a good life lesson behind it. I look forward to reading the next book and think that my daughter will enjoy this when she's old enough.
An Excellent book that puts fairy tale folk in places and situations I would have never imagined them to find themselves a part of. Fairy Tale reform school? What a concept. This book outlines what happens on the other side of the tracks in fairy tale land and the adventures that follow. One of the problem children eventually saves the princess to become the hero of the story. I found this to be a fun book that let my mind wander along with the story line and enjoy the flow. Some parts are predictable, but others are not, so there is a pretty good balance that keeps your brain on its toes, so to speak. As fairy tale stories go, this is a totally unique concept that I enjoyed very much.
Flunked takes all the joy and innocent bliss of nursery rhymes and fairy tales, adds new and fun characters (tweens will LOVE Gilly, Kayla, Ollie, and Jax) and enjoy a delightful read. There are some parallels to other Tween series that are wildly popular (this teacher would be equal to this professor) but the story is beautifully paced, wonderfully detailed, and just flat out a fun read. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series!
I liked everything about this book the thought of all the Baddies from the fairy tales we all know and love teaching and reforming bad kids? Who knows what would happen. I love the character of Gilly she's fun and a quick thinker and she does care about her friends. A true Thief she's always analyzing and thinking. I was often laughing at some of the things that she did. The sister of Professor Harlow AKA Evil Queen was the ultimate bully. Good thing bullies can't cast spells in real life! All the characters are very memorable and well written. Some are lovable While others are a little grating on the nerves (bullies). If you like fantasy and fairy tales definitely pick this book up.
