Sweet story
Written in 1863, the style is emotional Victorian with strong moral values. The boy in the story, Blair, is holding forth to his friends about the evil British prior to the war of 1812, when a English boy walks past the group. There is a British Boy, he points out to the group at which point they grab the kid and throw him off the pier. Unfortunately he can't swim. Blair dives into the ocean and saves him, taking him home to his Mother afterwards. This sets off the rest of the book.
Blair's Mother is strongly Christian and speaks to him of true Patriotism and true Christian behavior. This prepares him for the trials and tribulations that will follow. Very Christian, very patriotic, and very Victorian morality combine into a stiring inspirational tale. Very good.
This is interesting for seeing how people thought about patriotism, parenting, and salvation in the 1800's. Potential readers should be aware that there is as much Bible teaching as plot.
