This book offers a richly detailed look into the world of fandom, as well as a thoughtful discussion of the outside world’s real and perceived reactions to fandom. I joined my first fandom at 58 after my husband’s long illness and earth shattering death, and found it to be the powerful distraction that I needed. It also offered a chance to join a diverse and close knit community of kindred spirits, and this dynamic is thoroughly explored in the book. My short time in the fan world has brought me more joy than I’ve had in many many years, and has awakened an artistic creativity in me that had lain dormant my entire life. This intelligent and very funny book celebrates that kind of awakening, giving voice to those of us who have learned to let our fandom flags fly and enjoy a wild and surprising ride. Loved it from start to finish!

I wouldn't normally purchase a book like this, but it really intrigued me in that it sounded like (from the description) something that I'd recently experienced--an obsession with a television show. This obsession has, for the past few months, been very confusing. Now, I feel like there has been some light shed on this new, strange disruption of my life--it suddenly makes sense (not explaining that).

So thank you, to both of you, and to all who participated in creating this marvelous, and informative, book.
My review is kind of brief. If you enjoy the show Supernatural, then this book gives insight not only about actors, crew, etc.; but also a "light" academic discussion about fans & women feeling free to pursue their own fan-hobbies.

If you aren't a fan of Supernatural... Well first of all you should be a fan. And second, the tons of descriptions about conventions, inappropriate fan reaction, and the authors constant fan-girling might become tedious.

Personally, as a quiet Supernatural fan, I found this book far more enlightening than expected. Not just about the show but about the still rocky road of women having "unapproved" passionate hobbies. How we unwittingly enable that disapproval. And of course how the world of "serious" fans functions. That last part in and of itself was well worth the price of this book.

I'm not really the targeted audience for this book. I've watched Supernatural, but am not a regular viewer nor part of the fandom. And I have never questioned, felt guilty about, or embarrassed by my lifelong passion as a fan of multiple artists. But this book is about more than that. It is about the joy of fandom. It is about the escape that fandom allows us. When I was a teenager and surrounded by peer pressure, I remember saying that music was my drug of choice. And as we get older and try to juggle all life throws our way, we all need an escape. Fandom is a harmless, wonderful way to escape, as long as you do not let it take over your life. This book shows the joy the authors have found in fandom, and even the pain when they have let it take over. It is an amusing and heartfelt book. And even if you get nothing more out of it than a few hours of escape while reading it, isn't that what it's all about?
In reading this book, I found out that my experience with Supernatural is anything but unique. These women did what we diehard fans WANT to do (but are held back by finances or life or practicality) and I couldn't stop reading until the book was done. This book reads like a labor of love and I'm so glad they loved this show and this fandom enough to put this much work into a book that's for fans, by fans, and about fans. People fall hard for different shows and actors all the time...but there is something different about Supernatural and this book gets that across. I understand why other reviewers thought the authors pushed the slash fiction aspect of fandom too much; but that is their interest and they are free to write about it. The only criticism I have is that I found the most engaging parts of the book to be those that dealt with the authors' personal experiences (how THEY experienced being fans of the show in increasingly intense ways)...those were more engaging than the interviews with the actors and I wish they had done more interviews with other fans to get THEIR experiences on their road to being extremely involved fans of the show. But it was fascinating to read about how the two authors pursued their obsession and what the rewards of that pursuit were (as well as the price they paid for it). I wanted both; the interviews with the actors AND I wanted to hear more about the experiences of other fans. Thank you.

The authors examine - based on their own experiences and interviews with others - what motivates fangirls (and boys), why they love their fandoms and what to expect if you decide to wade into the fray. The book is based on the Supernatural fandom and fan conventions, but can be applied equally to any group of fans female and male. If you are a fan, you'll find validation for your thoughts, feelings and actions here. If you're not a fan of anything, this will help you understand your friends and family members who are fans of anything. The book has helped give me a sense of pride, rather than shame at being a fangirl (and I've been one for many years and hidden that fact). You will laugh, cry and squee! along with the authors and get insight from producers, con organizers and the actors themselves. I can't recommend this book highly enough. Easily my favorite non-fiction book of the year.
