Mayhem in Mayberry is a rollicking good read! Knopp has a rich writing style, vivid in description-and darned funny. I may never again feel the same about visiting the outskirts of town. I will undoubtedly be checking my back, watching for one of Knopp's ne'er-do-well crazies to pop out. But life is the richer for having read this true account of our world at large, and my own backyard. Mayhem at it's best!

Interesting stories...wish they were longer!!
Not what I expected
This private investigator tells some intereeting tales and some not so interewsting ones. Definitely a different premise for a book. A plot or a chronology would have been helpful to put this in contest.
Absolutely love this book. Read the paperback and read it again on my . I love his writing skills and the natural way in which he writes. It is like you are there.
When I sat down to start reading Mayhem in Mayberry I was betting on some entertaining accounts of Appalachia. Rollicking. The book was more than that. It was thoughtful and honest and full of insight. You get to see humans at some of their worst moments (the states they're in and the motivations they have when they hire PIs). Not at all tidy like in crime dramas on TV or movies. Messy. It's a great read.
For those who don't know, or have misconceptions of who and what a Private Investigator does. The cases, sufficiently kept confidential, are entertaining if you can get through the author's flourish and love affair with the English language. He didn't have to impress us with his vast vocabulary and inappropriate use of $200 words. Not that he had to 'dumb himself down' because of his southern roots, but the flow of the stories actually stumbled on his obvious command of the English language.
I judge a good book by looking forward each day to reading a few chapters, just staying hungry for the next day's adventure or information. A great book is one that I cant stop reading until it is done for fear of missing what's on the next page. An 'okay' book is one to take to the dentist's waiting room or airport to keep from being bored to death. This book is between okay and good. What would have made this a great book is what made Andy Griffith great as a storyteller - simple words with down to earth humor from common folks having common sense. Cut out the collegiate -speak and you have a winner Brian!
I wrote a four star review for this little book a few years ago. I want to change that to a five star simply because this little book has been an inspiration and an example of how nonfiction can compete with made up stuff. This book is not world shaking, but it is an honest journey and there are moments where you find yourself at his side, feeling the scene through the seat of your pants. Brian Lee has a wonderful sense of the dynamics of the English language, his humor may seem obscure and his style might strike some as over-done, but I find jewels in here, moments of truth and beauty that are beyond the pale. I just wish the book had more pictures.
