Starbirth Assignment SHIFTER Starbirth series Book 1 eBook J M Johnson
This book was a disappointment. The concept of people with special powers had promise, but overall the book didn't deliver a cohesive storyline or develop the characters into believable people of depth that I could care about. Lock wants to get home and see his wife and kid by Christmas but you never "see" his connection to them. The author would benefit from some workshopping of the storyline to "show" through actions and scenes versus "telling" through just narrative. It was confusing to follow--I was never clear on the difference between SAS and SIS until I saw the glossary at the end of the end of the book. There were some "twists" thrown in at odd points of the book that really didn't matter to the storyline. Stringer is Lock's cousin--so what? That tidbit added nothing-again develop the relationship between them so this revelation becomes relevant, otherwise don't bother. Too many details were taken for granted or didn't have basic logic. Why would an operative disguised as an old man be allowed into the birthday party of a druglord's grandson? This was for close family and no one raised the alert that there was a total stranger, especially when the compound is holding top secret weapons and drugs? Not likely. I understand the need to suspend belief but there was nothing in the story to help me do it. People kept transporting all over the place to places that weren't previously referenced or adequately explained. It seems as if the author just made it all up as she went along and never bothered with a story outline or final edit-and this is the newly edited revision-yikes. Read The Brilliance Trilogy by Marcus Sakey to see a better execution of the concept and genre.Tags : Starbirth Assignment SHIFTER (Starbirth series Book 1) - Kindle edition by J M Johnson. Starbirth Assignment SHIFTER Starbirth series Book 1 eBook J M Johnson Reviews
This is my first read by this author and while science fiction is not a choice genre for me, I found this book to be extraordinary and more of a crime thriller. Locke, the protagonist, is a professional shifter (teleporter via dimensions) and works as a consultant with a British Spec Op group assigned to fight crime around the world. Locke acquired his skill set through the accidental exposure to a drug and unfortunately, illegals are now manufacturing the drugs in the US and Europe causing chaos and havoc.
The book is well-written and detailed which speaks directly to the authors background and research. She does a masterful job in blending military science, science fiction, adventure and intrigue into an action-packed, fast moving and exciting read. I am on to Number 2. I recommend without reservation.
First, I must admit that I am not a scifi fan, especially military scifi. But this book was recommended to me and I decided to try it. I loved the story, thought the locations were well thought out, and the story planned carefully. All of that made for a nice read. The author does a good job of managing her characters and their interactions with one another. I would recommend this book to any scifi fans who enjoy a little humor along their adventure into a new world. I have now a changed view of scifi.
Starbirth Assignment SHIFTER, Book 1 - is a book I read out of order! Don't ask how this happened, but I bought the 3rd, then began reading backwards from there. I found The Shifter Dimension difficult to put down or forget, thusly realized I had rekindled my enjoyment of reading military intrigue novels. In my younger years I bought and devoured all of John LeCarre's novels, but Johnson's add a wonderful futuristic element.
I appreciated all the fine details showing the strong research Johnson put into this series. JM Johnson has given me a new interest in physics as well and I'm currently reading Richard Feynman - of all things. This says much about this authors ability to not only write a great storyline, but to throw in enough scientific facts to propel one back into learning.
Sure the brutal world of drug trafficking is always intriguing to read in disbelief, although we all realize this depravity exists and there's little being done to stop it.
Flawed characters make readers relate, brilliant details make our minds think, and uncommon adventures lead us to temporarily suspend long held beliefs and go with the flow. This great piece of fiction will keep you turning pages.
A nice shift away from my normal (at the moment) Military SF, in the sense that no rocket ships and aliens litter the landscape. At first i was a bit sceptical, as i am not a fan of ESP, got my fill of those in the 70's, but the book is well written, has a high pace, and a likeable main character.
The antagonists in this story are anti-(enter anything new), you know the type. As some people with more money then sense get riled up by the anti fires, things get hot.
Hard to say more without giving to much away, just let me say that i recommend it -)
