I first read this book many years ago and since that reading, have always answered the question "What's the best book you've ever read?" , with Five Smooth Stones. A couple weeks ago (and hundreds of books ago) I decided to read it again. I am even more disturbed and deeply moved after this reading...and this is still the best book I have ever read!Tags : Five Smooth Stones [Ann Fairbairn] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Even after my 5th reread, I still find this novel to be in my all time favorites. I found myself with nothing to read so I pulled out my hardback of this book. Much to my dismay I discovered that 74 pages had pulled away from the book's spine. I began reading anyway. And then I had a thought---would my local library have a copy? They did not! So, I ordered a paperback from you, . When I'm finished I' m going to donate to my library so that anyone else can have access to this beautiful story.
I read this book when it first came out and it really made an impression on me at that time. I have always remembered the book and decided I needed to read it again. It seems just as timely now as it did in the late 60s and early 70s. Gives one a wonderful perspective from a young black man and his feelings for the girl he loves. It is a forbidden love and it makes you want to make a difference for people who are experiencing this same problem today. Reading this again made me realize that we haven't come as far as we like to give ourselves credit for.
I have always been an avid reader. I read Five smooth stones in 1973, when I was 11. I never forgot how powerful it was. It made more of an impression than "A tree grows in Brooklyn", "To kill a mockingbird" and "Gone with the Wind". I started searching for this book in my 40s. No one ever heard about it and no library carried it. Thankfully it's been "rediscovered". I just purchased the hardback edition because it deserves a space in my personal library. Ann Fairbairn should be as recognized as Margaret Mitchell.
I first read this moving story over 40 years ago. Just finished re-reading and was as moved as the first time...even to tears at moments. This book should be required reading for high school students. My fear is that unless we stay vigilant, the past keeps repeating itself. While great strides have been made in legally correcting the civil rights flaws in our government, there is still need for improvement in the real world application. I'm an Oregonian, living near Portland, considered one of the more liberal places in the US. But I've also lived in New Orleans where I experienced first-hand some of the same types of prejudice and hate as that depicted in this book. Only by humanizing this ugliness can we ever hope to defeat it, and required reading of this book by young people who are forming their ideas and morals could help to lead us beyond the problem.
This was an important book when it was written and it is still an important book today. Few people, especially younger people have any clue at all of what it was like for black Americans during the middle of last century. They look at Black Lives Matter and wonder what all the fuss is about. I think every American should read this book then begin learning about that horrible blot on this nation's conscience. It is well written and easy to read but what is more important, it tells the truth.
I first read Five Smooth Stones in 1970, when I was a teen. I reread it in my 20's and again before I turned 30. I lost my tattered paperback at some point in my life. Recently I bought this book and reread it again, wondering if it would still resonate for me. It did. It is hard to read at times but also full of deep abiding love. One of the best books I've ever read.
I first read this novel in the '70's at my mother's recommendation, and have loved it ever since! The characters are among the richest and most fully realized that I've encountered in any work of fiction, and the reader is apt to fall in love with more than one of them long before this romanticw yet still all-too-relevant American societal tragedy has come to its close. Like so many other reviewers, I can't understand why this deeply moving and important novel has EVER been out of print since its first publication in 1966!
