I may or may not recommend this edition of All's Well, depending on what you plan on using it for. The footnotes and definitions are great, and really helpful when it comes to understanding the text. If you're reading the play for fun or just to get an idea of the story, then this version is fine.

However (and this is a big "however"), the punctuation has been changed from the original text. For some purposes, that's no big deal. But since punctuation is so important to take into account when studying and performing Shakespeare's works, I would not recommend this to anyone taking a college class on Shakespeare or performing in the play. I bought this edition because I'm doing a monologue from the play and needed context, but I ended up having to copy the monologue itself out of a different edition because the punctuation in this one was wrong.

I bought the book to use as I read the characher La Few in the recent Sacramento Shakespeare 30-hour Marathon where we read and webcast 12 comedies. I found the format with notes on one side and text on the other very easy to use. When next year's marathon rolls around, I'll be back!
Loved this Shakespearen play. It was a fun read. It arrived quickly and in good condition. This particular play is about love, pride, and the fall.
I like the annotations in the Foldger's editions. It helps a basic like me grasp the cultural significance and meaning of Shakespeare's works.
I prefer the Folger editions for Shakespeare because the notes are on the page facing the original text. That makes for quick reference if I have trouble understanding. The notes also include some reprinted drawings (all referenced) that help visualization.
What sets this edition of "All's Well..." apart is the very wothrwhile essay from Mr. McCandless contained in the back of the book. Mr. McCandless' essay comes a long way in helping readers understand the seemingly inexplicable heel-face turn of Bertram at the end of the play. Highly recommended not only for the vast textual notes and introductory passages, as all Folger Shakespeare editions contain, but especially for the enlightening essay by Mr. McCandless.
In rating this book three stars, I'm comparing it to other Shakespearean plays; compared to the general run of books available, it would probably rate five stars, and certainly at least four. But it's not in the top bracket of Shakespeare's comedies; it's flaws are nothing unique to itself, but are simply the problems inherent in many of his comedies, more noticeable here than in some others.

The biggest problem I have with this story is that I simply cannot watch it or read it without becoming overly focussed on the question, "What in the world does she see in him?" Helena goes to great lengths to gain Bertram as a husband; we never see what, exactly, he has done to earn her attraction, but surely, whatever it is can't possibly justify maintaining that interest after he demonstrates conclusively that he is a lying, arrogant, philandering scum with no consideration at all for meeting his responsibilities like a man. Why in the world would any woman smart enough to trap such a man with the traps she sets WANT him?

I've always had issues with Shakespeare's concept of romantic love; this play is not the worst in that regard, but it's far from the best.
This book is huge, maybe if you're using it as a script that's ok, but why do I need a coffee table size copy of All's Well That Ends Well?
