Ms. Tyndall's books are always a good read. They take you back in time to the days of pirates, and yet the characters struggle with all the same issues as we do today. The plot is fast moving and the changes in the characters over the course of the story are believable. The only thing I find objectionable is her use of mild curses in French. Just because they're in another language doesn't mean they should be written. Also there is a lot of supernatural things, like people calming storms, which according to Scripture, is something only Jesus, as Creator, could do.Tags : Charles Towne Belles Trilogy [MaryLu Tyndall] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <div> <P style= MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt >Follow the three Westcott sisters of Charles Towne, South Carolina,MaryLu Tyndall,Charles Towne Belles Trilogy,Barbour Books,161626215X,Christian - Historical,AMERICAN HISTORICAL FICTION,AMERICAN LIGHT ROMANTIC FICTION,Christian - Romance,FICTION Christian Historical,Fiction,Fiction - Religious,Fiction Christian Romance,Fiction Historical,Fiction-Christian,GENERAL,General Adult,Historical - General,Monograph Series, any,ReadingsAnthologiesCollected Works,RomanceGeneral,South Carolina,United States
Charles Towne Belles Trilogy MaryLu Tyndall 9781616262150 Books Reviews
The stories are so wonderful. The religious theme keeps you on track but does not dull the story. A bit of comedy too.
This series was excellent and a great value! Marylu Tyndall never disappoints. I receive so much hope and encouragement from reading her books. Very relatable characters in extraordinary circumstances.
Characters came to life in the Caribbean. I enjoyed the sister's distinct personality and the way that Ms. Tyndall painted the picture of life in that era.
Parts were far-fetched. But she drew you into the story and I didn't want to put the trilogy down.
The Charles Towne Trilogy - 5
I thoroughly enjoyed this series, although I don't think they are some of MaryLu Tyndall's best. Still, they have a good sense of time and place, and the characters are enthralling. She transports the reader to Colonial America and takes them on some wild rides and adventures aboard Atlantic sailing ships. What a set of couples these main characters make!
The Red Siren - 5
After their mother dies, Faith Westcott's father, an admiral in the royal navy, had her sister, Charity, marry an awful man who mistreats his wife and rapes his sister-in-law, Hope. Faith loses her trust in God and vows to make her fortune and rescue her two other sisters, Grace and Hope, from a similar fate. The only way she can think to do this is to become a pirate. The first time she meets Dajon Waite is when she takes his ship and cargo. Five years later, in Charles Towne, he doesn't recognize her when he becomes the Westcott sisters' temporary guardian. But he is part of the navy sent to rid the colonies of pirates and therefore Faith's enemy. Then, why does her heart and stomach do strange things whenever he's near? Despite, Dajon's proximity, Faith needs to hurry and gain the treasure she needs to be independent or else she'll be forced to marry the despicable, slimy Sir Wilhelm Carteret.
I had a hard time relating to this story for the first seven chapters. Perhaps it was because the female pirate novel has been vastly overdone and the fierce independent spirit of all three sisters seemed hard to swallow given the colonial time period. In fact many of their actions about the town would have caused them to be completely ostracized. They included going about unchaperoned, going to bars with men, and Hope drinking alcoholic beverages, besides Faith sneaking away to pirate. In many ways, this read more like a modern plot. I was even surprised to find some point of view changes without a break. However, the novel did get better and better, and I was pulled in. At first I was questioning if I could rate it more than a two, but by the end it was definitely a five-star book
The Blue Enchantress - 5
Hope Westcott was sure Lord Falkland loved her like he said, but when she puts it to an ultimate test, he fails miserably, and she ends up on a slave auction block. Out of the blue, Nathaniel Mason could possibly save her, but will he after she's always spurned him as beneath her back home in Charles Towne?
This is quite the adventure with shipwrecks, pirates, sacrifices, deception, and misunderstanding. Some of the tension actually ratcheted up too high, and I got frustrated with all the miscommunication and misunderstandings. There were some strange supernatural occurrences also, and most were forebodingly from the dark side, although some were from God as well. Although I could understand why Hope made the choices she had, it was still a little hard to have a main heroine with loose morals, although the reader doesn't have to actually see her in her compromising moments, since they occurred in the past. Despite these, however, there was much to like in the novel, and it definitely held my interest. I can't think of one boring moment. I gave it 4.5, which rounded up to a five.
The Raven Saint - 5
When Grace Westcott is kidnapped while trying to help the less fortunate, she thinks perhaps God allowed it so she could bring some of these rough people to Him. Yet, try as she might, she's not feeling as close to God as she had. She still tries to serve him by serving others, but she can't help but despair as her situation appears more and more hopeless. She is to be sold to a Spanish don in Columbia who has a grudge against her father. Captain Rafe Dubois is doing this because her father might be responsible for his mother's death and to get money to help build a much needed hospital on Hispaniola.
Rafe Dubois has had no love in his life, since his mother's death. In fact, everyone he's let close has betrayed him. He tries to tell himself he's doing the right thing in kidnapping Grace, but the more he gets to know her, the more he doubts it. He doesn't believe in a God who would let such horrible things and awful suffering happen, but the more he sees of Grace the more he begins to wonder if he's wrong.
I think this was my favorite book in the series, although I liked them all. This one wasn't as far-fetched as THE RED SIREN and not filled with as much of the supernatural as THE BLUE ENCHANTRESS. Its theme is forgiveness and not being judgmental or holier-than-thou in our service to God. Rafe and Grace were both loveable, while having very human flaws, which made them seem very real.
I really enjoyed these books. Honestly, the first books was my least favorite. There is something about Faith, the heroine, from the first book that I find unbelievable. However, as the book progressed I grew to like her. The other two books I have no complaints. Overall they are a great read about colonial America.
The storys are good and they are about a group of sisters & their exploits while their father is away. Only issue I have, is the book is HUGE! Its hard to hold while in bed, but I figured it out, LOL.
The author is great, love her stuff and I dont even like Pirate/Ship stuff normally. She is a true writer, and her books flow. They are all easy read. I would recommend this writer to anyone!
I enjoyed the atmosphere of the books, the historical setting and descriptive writing. The characters, on the other hand, I did not love. The women of this trilogy drove me a little crazy. All of them were terribly immature and selfish. At the end of each book there was always something of a transformation, but it was often too late for me. There were times when I really had to push myself to finish the story, simply because the heroine was being so annoying! Still, there were things I enjoyed about the books, so I give the trilogy a generous three stars.
